The 2012 inaugural "Evening to Bring Back Hope" event was a very special and inspiring fundraising event dedicated to the extraordinary life-saving work of Dr. Rick Hodes. The inspiration for this event is explained under the tab "How it all Started". Dr. Hodes is an American doctor who has served for 27 years as the Medical Director for Ethiopia for the Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), helping the multitude of sick and destitute in this poor country of 100 million people that seek out Rick's help from far and wide.
Sometimes referred to as “Father Teresa”, Dr. Hodes is an orthodox Jewish doctor trained in the field of Internal Medicine; working with the Mother Teresa’s Catholic Missionaries of Charity and various hospital clinics, Dr. Hodes treats people of all religions and ethnicities suffering from spine disease including scoliosis and tuberculosis of the spine, heart disease and cancer. A key partner in saving the lives of Rick's very complex spine patients since 2006 has been another remarkably dedicated humanitarian, Dr. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei. Dr. Boachie, a Ghanaian born,world-leading Spine Surgeon, set up his own Focos Foundation and ultimately a state-of-the-art Focos Spine Hospital to do spine surgeries in Ghana, and has been performing almost all of the complex surgeries on Rick's
spine patients since meeting Rick in 2006.
The story of Rick's life of devotion is indeed a unique one, involving his official adoption of five Ethiopian children in need of medical and other help, and fostering at any given time 12 to 18 other children while giving them appropriate treatment and enabling them to be properly clothed, fed and educated. Rick has been saving people with all kinds of backgrounds and from all religious and ethnic backgrounds.
A multi-cultural event, Bring Back Hope 2012 represented a diverse community of engaged and caring citizens working together to support Dr. Hodes’ remarkable mission of universal good. The event was championed by Vancouver philanthropists Gary and Nanci Segal in partnership with the UBC Faculty of Medicine. The $1 million net proceeds from the evening have been directed with great impact to JDC and Dr. Hodes’ life-saving mission in Ethiopia and to related capacity building work of the UBC Branch for International Surgical Care.
This was a most uplifting evening bringing together people of all faiths in support of a rare individual and his tireless humanitarian work.
