Dr. Rick Hodes

An Evening to Bring Back Hope once again will honour Dr. Rick Hodes, an extraordinary humanitarian who has devoted his personal and professional life to Ethiopia’s sick and poor.  For more than 25 years, Dr. Rick has served as the Medical Director for the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC).  Dr. Rick, a devout orthodox Jew, works with Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity and hospital clinics treating people of all religions and ethnicities.  Dr. Rick specializes in treating patients with severe scoliosis, tuberculosis of the spine, heart disease and cancer. Dr. Hodes has also provided and supervised medical care for victims of famine, war and disease outbreaks in Kosovo, Rwanda, Zaire (Congo), Tanzania, Albania and Somalia.

Dr. Hodes was inducted into the Medical Mission Hall of Fame in 2006 and in 2007 he was selected as a finalist for CNN Heroes.  The Medical College of Physicians has awarded him “Mastership” and the Rosenthal Award for creative practice of medicine.  He was honoured as ABC’s Person of the week in 2010. His work is the subject of the HBO documentary “Making the Crooked Straight,” as well as a book This is a Soul: The Mission Of Rick Hodes, authored by renowned journalist Marilyn Berger.  Dr. Hodes has also received numerous honourary degrees.

"Dr. Rick Hodes is one of the people who I think about, whenever I need to summon up a sense of hope for the future of the world. He is the best of what a human can be — generous, kind, tireless in service, warm-hearted, and (perhaps most reassuringly of all) funny. If only we could clone him! But until that day comes, the most we can do is emulate him."

“Doctors always ask why I send photos, why I don't just send the x-rays and blood studies. I want them to know this is a human being. This isn't just a back. This is a soul.”
– Dr. Rick Hodes

“It is not often in life one encounters a person considered a saint, a mensch, a hero. Our friend, Dr. Rick Hodes is one of those rare individuals.  Rick’s tireless humanitarian work has inspired us in ways we could not have imagined – you will never come across another story quite like Rick’s.”
