As I celebrated a wonderful Father's Day with family and friends yesterday, I took a moment to reflect on life and count my blessings. Besides Father's Day, it was also a week that marks 16 years since Tesfaye underwent a life-changing operation at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) on June 12, 2009 - an experience that shaped not only the course of his life, but mine as well. It has been my custom ever since Tesfaye's surgery to celebrate that noteworthy date as "Tesfaye's Rebirthday".

At the time of his 14-hour surgery, none of us knew what the outcome would be. There was concern and anxious moments of uncertainty, given Tesfaye's extremely complicated spine condition. But thanks to Tesfaye's undying courage and optimism, the world-class surgical skills of Dr. Marcel Dvorak and his team, and the extraordinary intensive care he received at VGH, he gained a new life. At the end of his five months post-surgery recovery with our family in Vancouver, he felt "reborn", eager to embrace his new future full of hope, strength, and joy.

So much has happened since Tesfaye's surgery, with three inspiring and successful Bring Back Hope (BBH) events in 2012, 2017 and last year in 2024. The BBH initiative continues to strive to make a difference in the lives of patients and families through advocacy, education and access to care.

This anniversary is again a moment of reflection about what we have achieved and what we continue to build together, but is also a special moment for me to pay tribute to the extraordinary Dr. Marcel Dvorak, who sadly passed away last month on the 9th of May.

A Tribute to a Remarkable Surgeon and Humanitarian and the Unexpected Ripple Effects of Life

A very dignified and impactful funeral and a celebration of his life took place on May 19th. Marcel's dear wife and partner in life, Sue, delivered an extremely moving and impactful eulogy that took all in attendance on an insightful retrospective of their life journey together. Dr. Dvorak was an extraordinary physician dedicated to improving the lives of his patients and the delivery of health care, a smart and caring person and devoted family man. As I reflect on the past 17 years, I am profoundly aware of the immense impact Dr. Dvorak had on my life and the lives of many others.

Many of you will know the origin of my deep connection to Marcel. In 2008, during a trip to Ethiopia, I met Dr. Rick Hodes and one of his patients, Tesfaye Anagaw, a young man with a severe spinal deformity who had exhausted all surgical options in Africa. Determined to help, I brought Tesfaye's medical file back to Vancouver, hoping that Dr. Dvorak, whom I had met through my parents, might have the expertise and willingness to assist. After pausing briefly as he analyzed the extreme complexity of Tesfaye's condition, Dr. Dvorak took on the challenge, helping navigate the complicated year-long process at Vancouver General Hospital to obtain the approval to operate on Tesfaye in Canada. Tesfaye survived the 14-hour surgery and the long recovery in ICU from post-op complications.

Dr. Dvorak's caring nature and exceptional surgical skills, and his vision to develop a world class spine department at VGH, served Tesfaye's life. Without his intervention, Tesfaye might not be alive today, and he certainly wouldn't have become such an integral part of my life and my family's lives that he is now. This experience inspired the launch of the Bring Back Hope Initiative, which has since raised millions of dollars in support of the Dr. Rick Hodes-JDC Spine Program in Ethiopia, funding spine deformity surgeries, training of Ethiopian spine surgeons, conducting early screenings for spinal diseases in Ethiopian children, and now fitting out a National Spine Centre for Ethiopia, scheduled to open in 2026.

It is fascinating to reflect on the chain of events that lead to certain outcomes in life, each event a key part of the chain. I am forever grateful for Dr. Dvorak's key role in the chain; because of him, my life in the last 17 years has been enriched in ways I could never have imagined. The ripple effects of his actions are countless, touching thousands of lives and inspiring many to take action.

As I remember Dr. Dvorak, I am reminded of the unexpected and unforeseeable ripple effects that can flow from being in a position to help just one person. His legacy is a testament to the power of compassion, dedication to excellence, and the human spirit. Marcel was also an excellent orator; indeed here is footage of a powerful speech he delivered at the inaugural BBH event in 2012.

Rest in peace, Dr. Marcel Dvorak. Your impact will be felt for generations to come.

Forever in our thoughts,

Gary.
